The rainbow food guide is getting an overhaul

In case you missed it, a big topic in the news lately has been about the changing of the food guide. Health Canada is in the process of revamping Canada's next food guide and there has a been a lot of discussion about it. Here are some of the updates discussed:

  • It promotes a plant-based diet
  • There will be an emphasis on plant-based proteins like beans, legumes, nuts and tofu
  • It will cater to all dietary needs such as vegan and vegetarian lifestyles
  • It will encourage Canadian's to drink more water, cook more and eat together
  • It will veer away from drinking milk
  • It will show the clear gap between Agriculture Canada's policies and food consumption
  • It will highlight that we should eat less red meat
  • It will detail that we should replace foods that contain mostly saturated fats (butter, cream) to

I agree with the new food guide considerations, although the correct dairy requirements for adults is not limited to milk only and should include yogurt and cheeses. It's been ten years since a change has been made to our food guide and it's clear that between food consumption, dietary and lifestyle changes, environmental changes and so much more that there is a need for an update. I think this is an exciting update and I look forward to seeing the new food guide when it's final.
